Russia and Algeria signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Nuclear Energy Co-operation

On April 27, 2016, the State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom” and the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique of Algeria signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy use for peaceful purposes. The document was signed by the General Director of State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom”, S.V. Kirienko, and the Chairman of Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique of Algeria, Mohamed Derdour. The memorandum is aimed at elaboration of specific forms of business cooperation between Russia and Algeria both in energy and non-energy application of peaceful atom. Particularly, an opportunity is provided for in the energy field of joint implementation of a NPP project in Algeria on the basis of Russian technology; cooperation in the field of nuclear fuel cycle; participation of Algeria in experiments with MFRR; cooperation in the field of nuclear safety; nuclear education and training of personnel, including training of Algerian students and specialists at Russian universities in nuclear specialties. Among non-energy areas, the parties agreed to continue discussion and assessment of possibilities to establish the Nuclear Science and Technology Center based on Russian-design research reactor, to construct a facility for the production of isotope products to be used in the Algerian industry, to construct nuclear medicine centers and irradiation centers for improving the efficiency of agriculture etc. The Memorandum envisages the joint roadmap development aimed at implementation of Algerian peaceful nuclear program. The roadmap is to specify mutually-beneficial projects and to be implemented by joint workgroups.
