Physical start-up of the first power unit reactor began at the reference nuclear plant for Akkuyu NPP

Core fuelling of WWER-1220 started at the first unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (reference nuclear plant for Akkuyu NPP). The staff of the nuclear power plant proceeded to works in accordance with the issued license for commissioning of the nuclear plant.

A number of works preceded the beginning of the first phase of the physical start-up of the power unit on NPP-2006 project, in particular: transportation of fuel assemblies (FA) from the fresh fuel storage facility to the reactor compartment, staff and equipment readiness inspection. On March 24, at 03:28 the first cassette was charged, and on March 25 the charge entered the active phase. As the NPP Director Vladimir Povarov told, safety is the main requirement to start-up of the new power unit. In accordance with this requirement for assurance of additional safety FA imitators were charged in the reactor core, besides fuel, and all neutron-flux monitoring equipment was installed at the stage of the physical start-up.

As the leading engineer, duty controller of the first standard charge test Fedor Tatarkin  explained, the charge is arranged so that the fresh fuel makes about a third of all charged cassettes at the first stage. Further fuel will be charged in accordance with the working schedule.

Power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is a standard project of Russian NPP of new generation 3+ with the improved technical and economic indices. It is constructed on NPP-2006 project with WWER-1200 reactor plant. The project was based on the half-century experience of safe and trouble-free operation of NPP with WWER reactors. The modern project accounts fulfillment of the requirements of the Russian regulatory and technical documents and IAEA recommendations. The main peculiarity of the innovative power unit consists in use of additional passive security systems in combination with the active traditional systems.

NPP-2006 project provides for protection against earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, aircraft crashes, as well as other technogenic effects and their combinations. Technical characteristics of the reactor of generation 3+ all Russian safety requirements and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with consideration of the events at Fukushima NPP. The reactor hall (containment) in NPP-2006 project has a dual containment vessel; the molten core catcher is installed under the reactor vessel, the reactor plant is equipped with the passive residual-heat removal system.
