The Russian Federation has provided the Turkish students with an opportunity to receive field-specific education in the Russian Universities in pursuance of the Intergovernmental Agreement. After graduation they will operate Akkuyu NPP.
The lecturers of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhİ tested the students of Turkish Universities in Ankara from July 01 through 07, 2011with a view to studying in the NRNU MEPhİ.
Over 9,000 students have applied for the admission tests. After the preliminary selection performed by the Turkish side prior to testing, 400 people were admitted to be tested in physics and mathematics. About 200 people successfully coped with the task. 48 of them, who performed best, were selected. They are now trained in the Russian Federation in the city of Obninsk. Academic studies began in October 2011. In 2012 69 people started their training. The program of preparatory courses includes study of the Russian language and basic disciplines: mathematics, physics and chemistry. After that the students will be admitted into the National Research Nuclear University MEPhİ to various training levels: Bachelor, Specialist and Master. The program has hands-on training at the operating NPPs in the RF.Up to 600 Turkish specialists are to be trained.
The average number of candidates for one place is 45. In 2014 around 4,900 applications have been received from the students of various Universities of the Republic of Turkey for training in the NRNU MEPhİ. It was the 4th admission of students to get Russian education in the nuclear energy. 83 students have come for training in Russian in 2014 based on the admission testing.
Big interest from Turkish students to Russian education in the field of nuclear energy is in evidence in Turkey. In 2015 the number of applications to take part in the admission tests for training of experts for the Akkuyu NPP project climbed to an all-time high – 6,100 applications for 80 places.
All students will work in the future at the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, Akkuyu NPP in Mersin Province. The education will totally last around 7 years: one year will be dedicated to studying Russian, then four years they will be spend for the field-specific training “Nuclear power plants, design, operation and engineering”; after that they will have on-the-job training at one of the enterprises of the Russian nuclear industry depending on qualification awarded after the graduation.
The students live 2-3 people in the dormitory, they have medical insurance, in the beginning of the academic year they receive a ticket Ankara-Moscow (one time) and in the end of the academic year – a Moscow-Ankara ticket (one time). There are 5 coordinators and 1 manager of the educational program to provide assistance and give a hand to the students. One of the coordinators is in charge of security issues. All coordinators speak Russian and Turkish and available for the students round-the-clock.
The students get scholarship throughout the whole period their study.
